I was just thinking since attachments can be stored it would be nice if more of the files could be, to make it closer to a pure front end.

I'm thinking it would be nice if eventually the only part not in the database was the asp code itself so that if say someone put up multiple IIS servers they could point to the same SQL instance and then give the same forum.

is it possible?

Avatars are already saved in the db or in the file system depending on the setting in the host settings.

Maybe I don't quite understand it but it looks like the avatar files (on mine at 2.2.0) are just flat files on the webserver, but I saw theres an option for attachments to live in the DB via filestream.

I was thinking that would mean the attachments would be in the DB not just refereanced by it, but the avatars are only referenced by it.

Only the avatars that are uploaded by the user are stored directly in the db, like the attachments.
